Top Tips for Winter Wellness

I am not going to allow this Winter de-motivate me!
— My Journal – 30th May 2018

As the cooler months draw in, our bodies and minds tend to slow down a little. Just like the world around us, we move through cycles which are closely connected with the environment.

But don’t worry — this is a good thing!

Lots of us feel off-kilter in winter. The shorter days and cooler temperature can cause dry skin and make us vulnerable to colds and flu. You might feel tired and drained, and this has an impact on your state of state of mind; with low energy comes low motivation and low mood.

How can we counter this? Let's face it, we still have to run our beauty business and we need to be aware of this shift for our clients and the way they might be feeling as well. So take what you wish from this for yourself and pass on some tips to your business as well.

Balance is key. Instead of fighting winter, we can embrace it as a time for calm and rejuvenation by adapting our daily self-care practices to suit the season.

Let’s take a lesson from the ancient Indian health system Ayurveda, which is founded on the principle that good health is rooted on equilibrium. In order to be balanced at all times of year, you must be ready to make changes that keep bringing you back into balance.

For example, in the heat of summer you might eat cold, fresh vegetables; salads, cool drinks and juices, and swim in cool water.

But to stay balanced in winter, it’s important to listen to how your body responds to the season and adjust accordingly:

  • If you feel cold and tired, nourish your body with warm, wholesome food — root vegetables in soups and stews are perfect for this.

  • Start your day with a hot drink to give your body a gentle, warming wake up. Warm baths are great too!

  • Welcome movement into your day to encourage healthy circulation; just 15 minutes of yoga, or a brisk walk, can make all the difference (but of course, if you love an intense workout, that’s good too!).

  • Take care of your skin by giving it some extra attention. In cooler weather it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated, and this takes its toll on skin — so drink lots of water, either cold, warm, or in the form of herbal teas. And schedule in some extra skincare rituals so you can keep your glow in front of your clients and feel vibrant, even if the skies are grey.

Allow yourself some time to be still. Enjoy the quiet moments that winter brings — and you’ll be ready to stroll right into summer when it arrives
