A Beauty Business Self Care Hack

I feel like I never give myself any self-care time. I’m sitting here writing in bed with a full face of makeup on and it’s not the first time this week - what kind of professional am I if I can’t do the things I teach my clients.

You run a beauty business. Chances are, you give other people self care advice all the time - whether it’s explicitly labelled as ‘self care’ or not.

You share tips on how your clients can care for their skin; how to make themselves feel beautiful, fresh, and alive; and how to embrace their perfect imperfections, to highlight their natural beauty. Maybe you even encourage your customers to work on beauty that starts from the inside out - you speak on the benefits of staying hydrated, taking time to fully relax, and getting out in the fresh air.

And then…there’s you.

The business owner, or freelance entrepreneur.

You work a lot. You love what you do - this is your passion. You are utterly invested in your business; financially, emotionally, on every day of the year.

Which means you’re tired. You work late. You squeeze work into every possible moment; from early mornings to late at night; writing emails while you’re in bed and replying to social media comments in chopping veggies for dinner.

Your passion is a huge part of your power, but it’s also the thing that can drain the energy out of you. You neglect those simple things you need to do in order to stay well and happy because…you have a habit of taking you out of the equation.

The problem with that is that when it comes to your business, you are everything. If you burn out, so will your brand.

I’m excited to share a little life hack with you - one that’s unique to beauty business owners.

As a beauty professional, you have to stay up to date with trends and practices that are relevant to your audience. To do that effectively, you need to have your own daily beauty routine; you need to be actively engaged in the techniques and practices, and the products, that you’re selling.

Which is good news: because your beauty routine can also be your self-care routine.

Start today.

Skincare is the perfect place to begin weaving self-care into every day. It starts with hydration, right? And drinking water is one of the best ways to care for your body and mind. So grab yourself a water bottle, fill it up, and take it everywhere with you. Each time you take a sip (or a swig) use it as an opportunity to check in; to notice your body, become aware of your feet on the ground, and notice how you’re feeling.

Then consider the rest of your skincare regime. Do you use exfoliators, cleansers, toners, moisturisers? If so, make those moments more mindful too. Find just five or ten minutes to use your favorite products, and even add a little self-massage to ease out tension in your muscles and in your mind. The process of applying products to your skin has wonderful potential for being a truly mindful, conscious, and caring act. Make it a daily ritual, instead of a daily rush.

You can take this idea of mindfulness and awareness into any aspect of your beauty routine. The practice of nourishing yourself and enhancing your beauty can be rich with positive feelings - at the same time as expanding your understanding of how your products and services can enrich your customers’ lives.

And you know how to do it. You’re a professional. There’s nothing new you need to learn!
